Comma (Polygonia c-album)

This week we returned to a regular venue for (hopefully) our last Himalayan Balsam pulling session of the year – the Merstone Stream in Blackwater.  It is important to try and keep on top of the HB as it is still flowering and seeding.  We made good progress and found enough to keep us all busy.    Undoubtedly, we will be re-visiting this site next year but hopefully will see a reduction in the amount of HB present.

Thank you to Simon for his photo and to Bob for leading the session (although he forgot the biscuits!!).

Bracket fungus

It was a welcome change this week to not be pulling Himalayan Balsam!  We were assisting Tony Gillingham, IWC Tree Officer, with the management of the wildflower area at Appley Park in Ryde.  The grass had been cut and so that the nutrients don’t return to the soil, we were asked to rake off any cut material.  Due to the hot, dry summer there wasn’t too much to rake.  One of Tony’s colleagues was raising the canopy of a few trees and his cut material and the raked off grass were put into a dead hedge.  We then moved eastwards and raked off a more challenging area which had been covered with brambles.

See link for a few more details about this lovely parkland -

Thank you to Terry and Mark for the photos.

Our photographer, Terry, was photographed!!

‘Rinse and repeat’ was the theme of this week’s GG session.  We returned to Southbank in Blackwater for more Himalayan Balsam pulling.  This is a lovely site perfect for all sorts of flora and fauna.  The HB has been growing parallel to the river and at this time of the year is very obvious.  We didn’t have a threat of thunder and lightning this week so persevered through a downpour to the end of the session.

One of our GG team is very handy with her needle and has made some HB seed pouches from a discarded curtain.  These make the seed collection much easier.

There was a discussion about the alder trees growing on the site – see the description of ‘Wet Woodland’ taken from the Wildlife Trusts website:

Wet woodland is characterised by trees such as willowsbirches and alder that thrive in poorly drained or seasonally flooded soils, such as in fens and bogs, pond and lakesides, river banks, and flushed hillsides. Wet woodland can, however, be quite varied in structure.

Wet woodland known as “carr” is often low-canopied, with willow and alder growing over a bulky ground layer of plants such as royal fern, yellow flag and meadowsweet. Along backwaters and in the loops of meandering rivers on floodplains, alders tend to grow taller and the rich silty soils support nettles and great willowherb.

Thanks to Terry for the photos, and to Mark for the photo of Terry!

Wednesday 3rd September 2025 - Southbank, Blackwater GG #1046

A new site keeps the GG team on its toes!  Despite the gloomy weather forecast 14 waterproofed GG-ers turned up at Mole Country Store who kindly allowed us to park within their site.  We then walked along the verge and down Blackwater Hollow and from there onto the land which is between Mole Country Store and the River Medina.  This piece of land is rough, ungrazed and left to the vagaries of nature.  Unfortunately, there is also a lot of Himalayan Balsam.  We set to and worked our way through the brambles.  After our tea break, the rain became heavier, thunder rolled in, and we decided to finish earlier than usual.  We will definitely be revisiting this site!

Thank you to Mole Country Store for the parking.  Apologies for the lack of photos - the conditions weren't conducive to photography!
